BEIJING (AP) -- Construction has begun on the second of three hydroelectric generating stations planned along the Qingjiang River in the central province of Hubei, the official Xinhua News Agency reported Tuesday.
The 3 billion yuan ($360 million) Gaobazhou Station will have three power plants with a combined generating capacity of 252,000 kilowatts, Xinhua said.
The three stations are being built in conjunction with the giant Three Gorges dam on the nearby Yangtze River.
China is building a series of major hydroelectric dams to meet rapidly growing power demands for industry and household use by an increasingly affluent population.
The first power plant was completed in 1994 at a cost of 5 billion yuan. A feasibility study is under way for the third on the upper reaches of the river, Xinhua said.
