Fremont Bridge needs major work

The Fremont Bridge is among four drawbridges and 230 miles of city streets that would be fixed up if Proposition 2, a $90 million transportation improvement bond measure, is approved by voters in November.

The measure earmarks $4.7 million for the 1917 bridge which the city says is the most frequently operated bridge in the world. That amount could be used to leverage an additional $7 million from state, federal and local sources.

Cyndi Lewis, spokeswoman for the Citizens for Seattle Streets campaign, said the Fremont Bridge approaches -- everything but the drawspan itself -- require extensive seismic upgrades and reinforcement. Lacking that, the span would be subject to stringent weight restrictions that would bar heavy trucks. The other three bridges to be fixed are the Ballard Bridge, University Bridge and the First Avenue South Bridge.
