SEATTLE -- If the dry weather holds, maintenance crews are expected today to begin resurfacing streets in the North Beach, Blue Ridge, South Beacon Hill, North Rainier Valley and Northern Rainier Beach neighborhoods with a process called chip sealing.
Renewing the chip seal surface preserves the condition of the streets. Chip sealing creates a highly skid-resistant surface, and prevents water penetration to the road's subsurface, thus limiting damage such as potholes to the street surface.
To prepare for this summer's chip sealing, crews repaired cracks and other roadway damage in the streets. SeaTran said chip sealing is cost-effective and fast, as crews can resurface up to several miles of roadway in a day's time. Chip seal surfaces need to be renewed every 10 years.
