SEATTLE -- Nearly 1,300 Seattle City Light customers have agreed to pay more for electricity generated from renewable sources.
The program began this year under state legislation mandating a "green power" option for customers of the state's electric utilities. At City Light the extra monies collected are going toward local renewable energy projects.
The first of these projects will be solar power at local public schools, beginning with the installation of photovoltaic panels at Pathfinder Elementary in West Seattle.
With 1,276 participants Seattle City Light has far outstripped the levels of participation in the green power programs at other utilities, including Puget Sound Energy, with 682, and Tacoma Power, with 375.
