Vestas delays wind power plant

PORTLAND (AP) -- Vestas Wind Systems says that delays by the U.S. Congress in extending tax credits for wind production has forced them to postpone construction of a regional wind turbine manufacturing plant.

Vestas, the world's largest wind turbine maker, was to open the plant next year and employ as many as 1,000 workers by early 2004.

Initially, Vestas said it would build the plant in Portland, but the process became competitive when Vancouver and Longview, Wash., were added as candidates.

City officials this week lamented Vestas' decision.
