Can dense cities be green cities too?

In October, the Architecture Foundation of Oregon gave Mike Houck its 2005 Honored Citizen award for his contributions to Oregon's built environment. The award may have surprised many of the foundation's supporters, and it certainly shocked Houck.

The biologist and activist is director of the one-man Urban Greenspaces Institute at Portland State University. He is also a naturalist for the Audubon Society of Portland and has spent 20 years advocating for nature in the greater Portland area, clashing with suburban developers and smart-growth urbanists alike.
