Environmentalists ready to fight cross-base highway

    Both opponents and supporters of the proposed $477 million cross-base highway between Interstate 5 and Spanaway were expected to turn out in force at a public meeting last night in Tacoma.

    The cross-base highway, a four-lane road that would be built across the borders of Fort Lewis and McChord Air Force Bases, is likely the most controversial piece of an $8.5 billion transportation package floated by regional leaders.
