Pollution raises cost of Olympia dredging

OLYMPIA (AP) — A project to dredge the Port of Olympia will cost more than $6 million because of dioxin levels in Budd Inlet that require the sediment to be handled carefully and shipped to a hazardous-waste dump.

The initial cost of the project was about $900,000 to remove 40,500 cubic yards of sediment that has accumulated at the port since 1979. But because of the dioxin handling costs, it is now estimated at $6.2 million, according to a preliminary engineering report prepared by Integral Consulting of Olympia.
