Ports unite to fight air pollution

The ports of Seattle, Tacoma and Vancouver, B.C., want ships and port-users to voluntarily reduce their diesel emissions and greenhouse gasses.

The goal is by 2010 to decrease particulate matter by 70 percent from ships at berth and by 30 percent from cargo-handling equipment. The plan is detailed in the Northwest Ports Clean Air Strategy, a draft document that is expected to be approved by the end of 2008.
