Runoff main source of sound pollution: report

  • Studies next year will assess how to reduce pollution from roads and development.
  • By KATIE ZEMTSEFF
    Journal Staff Reporter

A Washington State Department of Ecology report says toxins in surface water runoff are the largest pollutant of Puget Sound. Some of those toxins come from roads and development, and future studies will consider what could be done to fix the problem.

The report is the first phase of a long-term study that will examine toxins such as copper, mercury and flame retardants in Puget Sound. The study will be used by the Puget Sound Partnership to develop a program for controlling toxic substances through the 2020 Action Agenda, which is due out in September of 2008.
