OMAK, Okanogan County (AP) — The state budget proposed by Gov. Chris Gregoire would shut down seven fish hatcheries. One is the 74-year-old trout hatchery at Omak.
A Fish and Wildlife Department spokesman, Craig Bartlett, says the trout production could be handled more efficiently at other hatcheries. The state is putting more emphasis on raising salmon and steelhead.
