Are sewage treatment plants hurting the sound?
Early findings from a study by the Washington State Department of Ecology show that water discharged from sewage treatment plants is a major source of nitrogen in Puget Sound and may be contributing to low dissolved oxygen levels that hurt fish.
People living in the Puget Sound watershed have led to a doubling of nitrogen entering South Puget Sound from the watershed. During certain times of the year, humans add at least 10 times the natural levels of nitrogen.
