City will require building owners to measure and report energy use

  • The goal is to make buildings in Seattle 20 percent more energy efficient by 2020.

    Journal Staff Reporter

Yesterday, Mayor Greg Nickels announced a series of actions aimed at making buildings in Seattle 20 percent more energy efficient by 2020. They include requiring the owners of commercial and multifamily buildings to measure and disclose how much energy each building uses.

Commercial buildings larger than 10,000 square feet and multifamily buildings with five or more units will be affected. Buildings must use the Energy Star Portfolio Manager and the information will be automatically downloaded to the city. Training and technical assistance will be available before the program begins.
