ShoWare Center, Kent's new multi-purpose sports and entertainment space, won LEED gold certification. Kent says this is the first sports arena in North America to achieve the green certification.
Green features include low-flow water fixtures and dual-flush toilets that provide a 40 percent water savings compared to standard fixtures; native plant landscaping; and energy-efficient lighting, heating, cooling, ventilation and ice making equipment that reduces energy use by over 37 percent. More than half of the center's wood is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council.
The project was designed by LMN Architects and built by Mortenson Construction, with Paladino & Co. serving as environmental consultant.
Ben Wolters, Kent's economic development director and the project lead, said the team had originally targeted LEED silver at 33 points but pushed it to LEED gold with 40 points.
Kent Mayor Suzette Cooke said she is proud of the achievement. “Receiving LEED gold certification reaffirms our efforts to balance economic development with being good stewards of the environment. It's also pretty cool to be the first on the continent!”
