Silva Cell gives city trees a better shot at survival

The developer of the Escala condos paid for installing the city’s first Silva Cell, which cost $20,000. The cell supports pavement above, allowing tree roots to grow and protecting sidewalks from damage.

Seattle wants a bigger urban forest but trees have a tough time surviving when surrounded by streets, sidewalks and parking garages. A new system was recently installed that may help solve the problem.
