Snake River hydro project moves forward

IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (AP) — Two eastern Idaho canal companies are moving forward with plans to build powerhouses on adjacent sides of the Snake River.

The Post Register reports (http://bit.ly/1HHIbOT ) that the Idaho and New Sweden irrigation districts are looking to get a license with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission for the proposed County Line Road Hydroelectric Project. The project would be constructed about seven miles north of Idaho Falls.

The project includes building two powerhouses along the Idaho Canal and Great Western Canal, with a total capacity of about 2.5 megawatts. They are hoping to provide power for more than 1,500 homes.

Concerns have been raised about impacts to the Snake River and its ecosystem. The commission will do an environmental assessment.
