2 ‘Pavement to Parks' projects open

The city has opened the first two “Pavement to Parks” projects on First Hill.

In a press release the city said that the projects will turn underutilized street areas into public spaces, and help address the need for open space and better pedestrian connections on First Hill.

A rendering of an interim concept for one of the new public spaces is shown here: the intersection of University, Union and Boylston. A new public space has also opened at Ninth Avenue and University. Both were among the recommendations included in an action plan for First Hill.

The First Hill Improvement Association was awarded a Seattle Department of Neighborhoods grant to activate new parks and public spaces.

Design and construction for the first projects was done by the city at a cost of about $170,000. The first two are prototypes for new parks and public space, and will have temporary seating and other amenities.

The First Hill Public Realm Action Plan offers a number of strategies for creating a system of sidewalks, green streets, parks and rest areas designed to encourage more people to walk and also provide space for recreation such as jogging and playing basketball.
