Bellingham Technical College's Perry Center for Fisheries and Aquacultural Science was recently awarded LEED silver certification.
It was designed by HKP Architects of Mount Vernon with several features that reduce its environmental impact, improve indoor air quality and lower operating costs. The contractor was Roosendaal-Honcoop Construction of Bellingham.
The college had been located in an old power house that was once part of the city's wastewater treatment plant. The new 7,800-square-foot building lets people see students working in the hatchery.
There are systems to optimize daylighting and ventilation, and HKP said heat recovery ventilation and insulation further also reduce energy consumption, so the building uses 25 percent less energy use overall.
About 12 percent of the materials are recycled, and construction waste was reduced by 98 percent.
The project team also includes SvR Design (landscape), Wilson Engineering (civil), GeoEngineers (geotechnical), AHBL (structural), Notkin (mechanical) and Travis Fitzmaurice Associates (electrical).
