The group has until Oct. 30 to raise the money.
The trail, off Highway 2 near Index, crosses private land that is slated to be logged this year, Forterra said in a press release.
The landowner, Weyerhaeuser, is willing to sell the land for conservation. Total cost is just over $800,000, and about half has been pledged by Snohomish County Conservation Futures.
Saving the trail is part of a larger campaign to preserve and enhance what Forterra calls the Great Northern Corridor, from Skykomish Valley to the Salish Sea. In addition to providing recreation for the area's fast growing population, the program will also help struggling rural towns like Skykomish and Index.
