Ravenna Creek daylighting OK'd

Journal staff

SEATTLE -- King County councilwoman Cynthia Sullivan and Seattle City Council member Richard Conlin announced a joint agreement on Friday to daylight Ravenna Creek.

Under the agreement, King County and Seattle will daylight a portion of the creek in Cowen Park and the south end of Ravenna Park, then pipe the water from there to Union Bay. Currently, the creek runs through a pipe from the park all the way to the West Point Sewage Treatment Plant. The city will work with area residents during construction, and will maintain the daylighted portion of the creek through Ravenna Park.

Both the county and city agreed that daylighting the entire creek was not a feasible option at this time.

The county has allocated $3.2 million for the daylighting project and artwork. The city's proposed parks funding levy, scheduled for the ballot this fall, would help fund the design of the creek as it runs through the park. Construction is set to begin in 2003.
