SEATTLE -- A coalition of conservationists announced the largest forest acquisition project in Pacific Northwest history yesterday.
The Cascade Conservation Partnership will purchase 75,000 acres of wildlife habitat and old growth forests that link Mt. Rainier with the Alpine Lakes Wilderness. The land lies 50 miles east of Seattle, along the crest of the Cascade Mountains. It comprises the narrowest expanse of public land in the entire range, from Northern California to British Columbia.
The Partnership plans to purchase the land from the Plum Creek Timber Co. for approximately $125 million. One-fifth of this sum will be raised from private sources and the remaining $100 million will come from the federal Land and Water Conservation Fund over a three-year period. Once acquired, the land will be permanently protected under U.S. Forest Service designations.
