SEATTLE -- Seeking to buttress the Bush administration's environmental bona fides, Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Christie Todd Whitman will make two Seattle-area appearances today, announcing federal support for clean air and highlighting new technology's role in easing America's energy woes.
At a morning ceremony at Myrtle Edwards Park, Whitman will help announce a public-private partnership that reduce the emission of particulates and toxics from diesel engines through the use of low sulfur fuels and engine retrofits.
Partners in the program, called Diesel Solutions, include Tosco Refining's Ferndale operation, the city of Seattle, King County Metro, Boeing and the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency.
Later today, Whitman will visit the Wind Turbine Co. in SoDo. After touring the company's turbine manufacturing operation, Whitman plans to discuss the role of new technology and conservation in the administration's energy policy.
Wind Turbine, founded in 1989, believes its proprietary turbines can reduce the cost of wind energy by 30 percent.
