Fiber optics to flow in city sewer system

SEATTLE -- Mayor Greg Nickels yesterday announced an agreement to allow CityNet Telecommunications to deploy high-speed fiber optic networks through the city’s sewer system. In exchange, the city will receive a $50,000 down payment and a use fee of up to 2.5 percent of the service revenue from CityNet’s Seattle customers.

The non-exclusive agreement allows CityNet to deploy its high-tech robot, known as a Sewer Access Module, to navigate the sewers to install broadband networks for local telecommunications, cable and broadband carriers. The system reduces the need for trenching, normally associated with the installation of fiber optic networks.

CityNet will contract with Seattle Public Utilities to repair, clean and maintain the sewers in which it installs fiber.
