HILO, Hawaii (AP) — Sponsors of an astronomy project, that would place telescopes able to rapidly scan the sky to detect large asteroids and comets heading toward Earth, are trying to win public support to locate on Mauna Kea.
The Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System, or Pan-STARRS, would replace a nearly 36-year-old University of Hawaii 88-inch telescope if it's built at the summit of the Big Island volcano.
