Hawaii gets digital TV towers a month early

  • Old analog TV towers, and their wires, are being removed before the Hawaiian petrel's nesting season starts in February. The new digital TV towers are being built at lower elevations.
  • HONOLULU (AP) — Hawaii has moved up the islands' transition to digital TV, making it the first state to go through the change. And it's all for the yapping Hawaiian petrel.

    To protect the endangered volcano-dwelling bird, Hawaii will switch to digital TV on Jan. 15, more than a month ahead of the nationwide mandatory conversion Feb. 17.
