New Facebook data center will provide ‘cold storage'

  • Unlike the larger, always-on data centers, most of the “cold storage” computers will be asleep.
  • PRINEVILLE, Ore. (AP) — Facebook is putting a third data center on its property at Prineville, this one a more energy-efficient “cold storage” warehouse for photos, videos and posts that people don't need every day.

    The social network company says 82 percent of its traffic is focused on just 8 percent of its photos, and the facility is a more efficient way to store photos that aren't in heavy rotation, The Oregonian reported.
