The line-up for EMP's grand opening weekend concert has gotten longer. Homegrown heavy metal band Queensryche, British pop musician Joe Jackson, and 11 other acts have been added to the event.
Queensryche joins other Northwest bands playing in Memorial Stadium on Sunday, June 25. The 2 p.m. show now boasts a collection of Northwest artists playing for more than eight hours. Members of Mudhoney, Presidents of the USA, Metal Church, Heart and Sir Mix-A-Lot are all slated, along with full sets from Ann Wilson, Young Fresh Fellows, The Fastbacks, Built to Spill and Screaming Trees. ($15, TicketMaster).
Joe Jackson will appear as a special guest of Rickie Lee Jones (Friday, June 23, 8 p.m., Bagley Wright Theatre, $25). Jackson is slated to play several songs solo before teaming up with Jones.
Dedicated to exploring creativity and innovation in American popular music, EMP is a new kind of museum designed to capture and reflect the essence of rock 'n' roll, its roots in jazz, soul, gospel, country and the blues, as well as rock music's influence on hip-hop, punk and other recent genres. A total sensory experience awaits visitors when doors officially open. Patrons will make their own music, see and learn about artifacts and memorabilia from EMP's collection of more than 80,000 items.
Founded by investor and philanthropist Paul G. Allen, under the direction of co-founder Jody Patton and designed by architect Frank O. Gehry, the 140,000-square-foot multi-colored, "swoopy" museum opens June 23. More than one million visitors are expected in the first year.
