Alaska locomotives in Tacoma for overhaul

A 1950s-era locomotive owned by White Pass & Yukon Railroad of Alaska was moved from a barge onto the dock at American Construction Co. on Tacoma’s Tideflats. The locomotive is one of two that will be transferred to Tacoma’s Coast Engine and Equipment Co. to be rehabilitated and repowered with the latest low-pollution generators.

TACOMA — Two rare, narrow-gauge diesel locomotives, one of them more than a half-century old, have come to Tacoma to get a new lease on life.
