ELBE, Pierce County — The 75-ton steam locomotive, huffing and puffing through the woods near Mineral Lake, pushed a windowless passenger car full of former loggers and railroad logging buffs. Blasts from its steam whistle harkened to another era.
The steam engine hadn't hissed in 47 years, but thanks to the faith of one man, the promise of another and the hard work of many volunteers, it has a new life with the Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad, based in nearby Elbe.
