HONOLULU — Concern about the environment, congestion and erosion of Hawaii's low-key charm has done little to slow the spread of development here. But corporations from Wal-Mart to Whole Foods Market have run into a more formidable obstacle: the dead.
Numerous Native Hawaiian burial sites have been unearthed amid an islandwide building boom, leading to legal battles, costly construction delays or redesigns and hurt feelings among some Native Hawaiians. They say the dead should be allowed to rest in peace.
