Seattle City Councilmember Mike O'Brien is holding a Lunch & Learn about backyard cottages Dec. 9 from noon to 1 p.m. with the Department of Planning and Development.
The event will be in City Hall Council Chambers at 600 Fourth Ave. Backyard cottages owners will be there to talk about their experience with permitting and construction.
DPD staff is preparing to draft new legislation next year that will make it easier to build detached dwelling units. The city has allowed them since 2010 in all single-family neighborhoods but DPD said fewer than 200 have been constructed.
Building these units will help increase the supply and variety of housing. The DPD website says putting smaller units onto existing lots puts affordable housing in areas where homes are expensive, and can give homeowners extra income.
DPD said it wants to remove code barriers so property owners can get permits more easily.
More information is at www.seattle.gov under DPD and codesrules.
