Central Co-op said in a press release it will compete to be the retail centerpiece of new development near the Capitol Hill light rail station.
Last year, the Sound Transit Board approved plans for Gerding Edlen to develop four sites adjacent to the station, with more than 400 units and an emphasis on affordable housing.
Gerding Edlen did not return a request for comment.
Gerding Edlen has said in news reports it is talking to Portland-based New Seasons Market about anchoring the retail portion of the project, but no decisions have been made.
Central Co-op said it should be the main retail tenant because it is a local business, employee- and customer-owned, with more than 15,000 members.
A new store would be an expansion for Central Co-Op. Last year, the grocer signed a 20-year renewal of its lease at 16th Avenue and East Madison Street, where it has been since 1999.
