Council approves downtown rezone

SEATTLE — The Seattle City Council on Monday unanimously approved a plan to rezone much of downtown and South Lake Union to increase affordable housing.

Under the new program, developers will have to build affordable housing or contribute to a housing fund in return for taller building heights.

“By adopting the Mandatory Housing Affordability program in these neighborhoods, we will be able to deliver 2,100 affordable homes over the next 10 years, a critical component needed to meet our goal of 20,000 affordable homes,” said City Councilmember Rob Johnson in a statement.
