WSECU starts 7-story building in U District

Washington State Employees Credit Union will hold a groundbreaking ceremony today at 11 a.m. for its seven-story, 66,750-square-foot building at 1121 N.E. 45th St. in the University District.

WSECU's University District branch will move into two floors of the building, which is expected to open in the third quarter of 2018.

The architect is SkB Architects. Falkin Associates is project manager and Howard S. Wright is the general contractor.

WSECU said it wants the structure to make a bold gesture along 45th. It was designed with a dramatic northeast “lantern” corner that reveals glass curtain-wall within the dark facade.

The credit union will occupy the first two floors — which will be connected by a north-facing atrium. Floors three through seven are available for lease. There will be 950 square feet of retail space, as well as a community meeting room, bicycle storage and 54 parking stalls.

Jeff Huntington and Bill Frame of Kidder Mathews are representing the office and retail space.

WSECU bought the 11,000-square-foot site in 2012 for $3.9 million. It is near UW Tower and one block east of the light rail station, which will open in 2021.

WSECU leases about 5,500 square feet across the street, at 1100 N.E. 45th St. That branch and offices will move into the new building in 2018.
