NW schools spend big to play indoors
When the University of Washington unveiled the Dempsey Indoor practice facility before last Saturday’s home game, it marked the culmination of a project that’s been in the works since 1996. Washington follows other large universities around the country that are building impressive athletic facilities to lure student-athletes.

Versatile structure is built to fit
Nestled beside Husky Stadium and the Women’s Fastpitch Softball Building, Dempsey Indoor houses a 100-yard football field and a 300-meter, five-lane running track.

Husky practice building gives designers a workout
The challenge: getting a big structure on a tight site to fit into its surroundings.

Can’t get no liquefaction
More than four dozen concrete piles prop up Dempsey Indoor, protecting it from the sodden soil beneath.

Bright lights, big facility
Dempsey Indoor’s vast spaces and multiple uses require unique approaches to lighting.
