Jerry L. Abdie has been promoted to manager of structural engineering at KPFF Consulting Engineers' Portland office. He joined the firm in 1987. His current projects include Nike World Headquarters expansion, Jantzen Beach Mall Renovation, City of Gresham City Hall, Oregon State University Central LIbrary Expansion and pollution control laboratory for the City of Portland. Ronald G. Kernan, who joined the firm in 1983, has been named an associate with KPFF. He is now at work on seismic evaluations for Portland Public Schools, a community center for the Bureau of Parks and Recreation, a jail expansion for Multnomah County, an addition to Good Samaritan Hospital, and several medical clinics for Oregon Health Sciences University. Christopher L. Thompson has also been named an associate with KPFF after seven years with the firm. His current projects include the Doernbecher Children's Hospital; Historic Pioneer Courthouse prospectus and the Linn County Fairgrounds Exposition Hall.
Robert T. Girardo has joined the Seattle office of Harris Group, Inc. as a senior project manager. He will focus on engineering design for the oil, gas and chemicals industries in the West and Alaska. He leaves a position as vice president of Chiyoda International Corp. of Seattle. Chris Thompson has been promoted to the position of vice president corporate development at Harris Group. Thompson has been vice president and was previously power industry director for the company. He also was operations manager and one of the original founders of Harris Group's Denver office.
Thuan (Tony) Nguyen has joined the staff of Peratrovich, Nottingham & Drage (PN&D). A 1995 civil engineering graduate of Seattle University, Nguyen has been performing pile driving inspection for the Port of Seattle's Bell Street Pier project. He has also been at work on gangway designs for several projects throughout Puget Sound as well as performing coastal engineering studies of the Port's Pier A project. Prior to joining PN&D, Nguyen worked as a road maintenance technician for King County and as an engineering technician for the City of Des Moines.
Tom C. Xia has been promoted to associate/technical director a D'Amato Conversano, Inc. of Kirkland. Xia's experience includes seismic design for the Boeing 777 Assembly Plant in Everett, the North Pacific Insurance Company in Bothell and the Wenatchee Medical Center. He is currently project manager for the BHP Administration Building project in Kalama.
John W. Moran has been promoted to associate at Ruhl-Parr & Associates. While with the firm for the last two years, he has Managed the $41 million Tulalip resort and casino, and office and warehouse in Woodinville, and office park in Gig Harbor and numerous fast food restaurants for Wendy's and McDonald's. Moran is currently managing the design and installation drawings for over 200 cellular telephone transmission sites throughout Western Washington.
Janet Moore has joined Thomas Hacker & Associates as a project architect with 12 years of experience in the design of commercial, industrial and multi-family housing projects. She is currently working on the remodel and addition to the Yellowstone Art Center in Billings, Montana and the Schneider Museum of Art at Southern Oregon State College in Ashland.
Kamran Marashi has joined the Seattle office of Lockwood Greene as senior group leader of the engineering department. He will oversee structural projects. Marashi has held previous positions with John Graham Associates, Zurn/Nepco, N.G. Jacobson and Associates and KPFF.
Pat Keough was selected unanimously this spring as the 41st member of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Gallery of Distinguished Civilian Employees. Keough retired in June of 1990. He began his 30-year federal career designing concrete bridges and developing the structural design for the Chief Joseph hydroelectric project. In the Portland District, he worked on the $173 million restoration program fr the Cowlitz and Toutle river basin following the 1980 eruption of Mt. St. Helens.
Bob Thompson of Thompson Vaivoda & Associates Architects, Portland, has been selected by the American Institute of Architects (AIA) as one of eight jurors to judge the 1997 Honor Awards recognizing outstanding architectural design worldwide. Several Thompson Vaivoda & Associates designs have received national recognition for Portland projects, including the Nike World Campus, Metro Headquarters, and the Marilyn Moyer Meditation Chapel at the Grotto.
