David Cox has joined The Traver Company, a Seattle design firm, as a graphic designer. Jennifer Covington has joined the firm as an administrative assistant.
SEATTLE -- Spectrum '96, the biennial meeting on nuclear and hazardous waste management, will take place at the Washington State Convention & Trade Center in Seattle Aug. 18-23. Many workshops and special events are planned, including a panel discussion on "Educating Future Environmental Management Professionals" from 1:30 to 5 p.m. Monday, Aug. 19, at the Seattle Sheraton Hotel. Panel members will include: John Stanford, superintendent of Seattle Public Schools; Chuck Clarke, administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency's Region 10; Dr. Sam Smith, president of Washington State University; Bob Hughes of Bechtel; and Dr. Richard McCormick, president of the University of Washington (invited). Other highlights of Spectrum '96 include a workshop on how to do international environmental business from 1 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 18, and a workshop on strategic environmental management from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 18. The theme of Spectrum '96 is "Accomplishments, Progress and Results" in the realm of radioactive and hazardous waste management and environmental remediation. The conference is designed to promote increased regional, national and international understanding of the U.S. Department of Energy's cleanup needs and business opportunities. More than 1,500 people are expected to attend the conference and learn about new environmental management approaches and technologies. More than 500 papers will be presented by environmental scientists, engineers, managers and policy makers. The conference will focus on Hanford, the USDOE's most contaminated site. Technical tours of Hanford will provide opportunities to see waste cleanup activities and advanced technology development in action. A limited number of seats are available for an all-day bus tour from Seattle to Hanford. This is the sixth biennial conference of its kind co-sponsored by the American Nuclear Society and USDOE. SEATTLE -- A seminar on "Brownfields Redevelopment in Washington" will take place Aug. 15 and 16 in the Seattle Center's Olympic Room. Speakers will examine the legal requirements and practical strategies for redeveloping contaminated industrial property and explain new tools which can reduce liability risks. The event is designed for lawyers, developers, owners, consultants and government officials. Program co-chairs are Bradley Marten, a partner in Marten & Brown, and Thomas A. Newlon, senior port counsel for the Port of Seattle. The seminar will include tips on making deals work, taking clients through the process, financing and selecting cost-effective treatments. Risk assessments, insurance coverage and case studies of brownfields projects also will be discussed. EDMONDS -- Lizzie Zemke has joined Pentec Environmental, an Edmonds-based environmental consulting firm, as project wetland scientist. She has eight years experience developing mitigation and restoration plans to compensate for urban, forestry and mining impacts on wetlands and upland environments. Maggie Glowacki was promoted to project fisheries biologist. She has four years experience doing fish studies for timber companies, the mining industry and government agencies.

Mary Jane Lundsgaard, 1996 MAME chairperson, announced the deadline for entries for the MAME awards is today. The MAME (Major Achievement in Market Excellence) awards program, to be held Sept. 21, in now in its 13th year. Its purpose is to honor the important contributions of builders, architects, land planners, interior merchandisers, suppliers, technical tradespeople, advertising and other facets of the homebuilding industry.
