Conference on water resource issues at SAM

SEATTLE -- "The Water 'Crisis': Myth, Reality and Opportunities" is the theme of a conference scheduled for 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Nov. 20 at the Seattle Art Museum. Sponsored by the Washington section of the American Water Resources Association, the conference will examine whether or not there is a water crisis in western Washington. Various areas of water resource management will be addressed, including legal issues, cost issues, growth projections, demand forecasts, water rights, hydraulic continuity, water reuse, groundwater storage and supply alternatives. Dr. Jim Riley, a mechanical engineering professor at the University of Washington, plans to discuss the classic works of Leonardo Da Vinci as applied to water engineering and water issues of today. Other speakers will include representatives from local governments, water districts, the Department of Ecology, CH2M Hill, RH2 Engineering, AGI Technologies, GeoEngineers, ECONorthwest and Bogle & Gates. Department of Ecology awards grants, loans

OLYMPIA -- The state Department of Ecology has awarded the following grants and loans to local communities for projects to improve water quality, wastewater treatment systems and solid waste facilities.:

  • a $903,000 State Revolving Fund low-interest loan to Chewelah to design improvements to the city's wastewater collection and treatment facilities;
  • a $460,370 Centennial Clean Water Fund grant to Pe Ell to fix two sewage pump stations that overflowed last winter and entered Snow Creek and the Chehalis River;
  • a $218,000 State Revolving Fund low-interest loan to Port Townsend to develop a comprehensive sewage plan;
  • and a $44,000 Centennial Clean Water Fund grant and a $54,000 loan to Colton to develop and produce a combined general sewer and facility plan.

Veteran real estate executive reorganizes Sound Ve

Veteran real estate executive Doug Klappenbach has reorganized Sound Ventures Inc., a Bellevue-based company specializing in the development of commercial, office, retail and industrial properties. The firm, already recognized as a build-to-suit specialist, will also provide brokerage and investment services for real estate clients. The company currently has $10 million of development projects in the pipeline. In addition to its development, investment and brokerage capabilities, Klappenbach says Sound Ventures Inc. will provide integrated construction management and design/development services. The establishment of Sound Ventures marks a "reincarnation" for the company. From 1986 to 1992, Klappenbach's firm developed over 800,000 square-feet of office, industrial and retail properties, primarily in South King County and the Eastside markets. From 1992 through 1996, Klappenbach was vice president/general manager for Opus Northwest, a national developer/contractor, where he directed that company's development and construction business for the Northwest which exceeded $70 million in value. The Opus group of companies was recognized by national Real Estate News as the largest developer in the U.S. in 1995.

1997 Street of Dreams site announced

Stanwood Development Inc., the producers and organizers of the Seattle Street of Dreams has announced the location for its 14 annual event. The 1997 Seattle Street of Dreams will be held in Blakely Woods, located southeast of the Issaquah Plateau. The showcase of luxury homes will spotlight seven estate sized custom residences constructed by Puget Sound area builders. The homes will average 4,500 square feet on a large 1 to 3 acre lots and will be priced up to $1.2 million. The show will be open to the public July 12 through August 17, 1997. The 1997 featured builders are: Tom Braaten Construction, Classic American Homes, Inc., Encore Design/Build-A Division of Newhall Jones, Inc., Gregerson Custom Homes, Inc., MacPherson Construction and Design, Parkwood Homes, Inc., and Steven S. Smith Construction. Starwood Development has also announced the selection of Coldwell Banker Bain Associated as the exclusive Realtor representative for the 1997 show. Art Anderson

Patrick Stone has joined the civil/structural engineering division at Art Anderson Associates with a diverse range of professional experience in England, Australia and Virginia. Stone joins principal-in-charge Rob Henry to work on Bremerton's Sinclair Landing design. Mark King rejoins Art Anderson as a mechanical/electrical designer. His primary focus will be on the U.S. West Wireless project. King has participated in mechanical design efforts for the Port Orchard City Hall and Sinclair Landing projects.

John Graham/DLR

Steven McKay has joined John Graham Associates/DLR Group as an architectural designer. McKay earned a bachelor's degree and post-graduate degree in architecture at Strathclyde University in Glasgow, Scotland. He holds experience in design and quality control. McKay has been working on the Ala Moana Shopping Center Expansion and Makai Parking, in Honolulu, Hawaii. De Hu joins John Graham/DLR as an architectural designer, with a master's degree from the University of Idaho and a bachelor's degree from Tongji University in Shanghai, China. His designs encompass a variety of building types: schools, restaurants, hotels, casinos, office buildings and industrial facilities. Since joining the firm, Hu has worked on the Disease Vector Ecology and Control Center at the Naval Submarine Base Bangor in Silverdale and the Hospital Utility/Life Safety and Interiors Upgrade at Fairchild Air Force Base in Spokane. Kelly Williams comes to John Graham/DLR as a CAD technician and architectural drafter, with a background in architectural standards, building code requirements and design concepts. Denea Hanes is a project administrator at John Graham/DLR. Hanes provides administrative assistance to project teams throughout the design, bid and construction phases.

M&C

McLellan & Copenhagen, Inc. (M&C) has promoted Shawn Pixley to principal. Pixley joined the firm as a laboratory planner in 1989 and has since broadened his experience to include a wide range of designing, programming and planning various research and teaching facilities for major institutional and academic clients. His recent completed projects include Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Phase I, Basic Sciences Research Division and Phase II, Clinical Research and Public Health Science; NOAA -- University of Alaska, Fairbanks; Alaska Department of Fish and Game; University of British Columbia, Centre for Molecular Medicine and Therapeutics; and the University of Washington's Chemistry Building. He is currently working on the U of W's Engineered Biomaterials research and teaching laboratory.

URS

Michael Kyte, a biologist and consulting scientist, has joined URS Consultants, Inc.'s Biological and Risk Assessment Group. His current projects include Arco's Cherry Point refinery; Tosco Refining Company's Ferndale refinery; Puget Sound Power and Light and the City of Sequim. Kyte's professional specialties include impacts, habitat and shellfish resource assessments, marine flora and fauna biology and mitigation, echinoderm taxonomy, octopus biology, scientific diving, and marine and aquatic biological and contaminated sediment sampling.

Interface

Carter Witt has joined Interface Engineering as an electrical engineer. He has extensive experience on schools, commercial and industrial buildings, and correctional facilities. He is currently working on the Gates project. Stuart Reynolds has come to Interface as a mechanical designer intern. He is currently working on the First Christian Reformed Church, First Hill Care Center and the Burlington Fire Station. Kevin Hazelwood joins Interface as senior electrical drafter. He is currently working on the Gates project, Meyer Motel, and several Vencor Health Care projects. Brian White has joined Interface as a mechanical drafter. White is currently working on Seattle's Best Coffee and Parkview Acres Health Care Center.

RHL

James Presten, the regional office manager at the Bellevue office of Robert H. Lee & Associates, Inc. (RHL), has been named an associate. Preston has over 25 years experience managing design and construction professionals involved in corporate development programs. During his four years with RHL, he has overseen programs for Chevron, Tosco, Boston Market, GTE and Arco. Preston has expertise in construction management, retail construction and petroleum industry projects.

TVA

Thompson Vaivoda & Associates, Architects (TVA) has hired Clark Brockman, Michael Feinstein, Rudy Tandjono and Stephen Korbich. Brockman is experienced in library, higher education and campus facilities and will be working as project manager for the Nike World Campus expansion. Feinstein specializes in mixed-use commercial, theaters and health care, and is project architect for the Fox Tower to be located in downtown Portland. Tandjono has worked on higher education and retail commercial renovation projects. Korbich specializes in "green" architecture. Tandjono and Korbich are both working on the Nike Campus expansion.
