D3 Technologies, a nationwide design engineering and consulting company headquartered in San Diego, and with division in both Mukilteo, Wash. and Philadelphia, has been awarded two five year sub-contracts to support the Warner Robins Air Logistics Center. The first sub-contract is to provide Electrical and Avionics Systems Engineering Support for C-130 and C-141 aircraft and the second is to provide technical support for the Air Force Special Operations Forces' fleet of fixed and rotary wind aircraft.
Richard Buckley has been named a partner with NBBJ. Since joining the firm in 1984, Buckley has been involved in the design of the Paramount Theatre renovation, Seattle downtown retail core redevelopment, Market Place Tower, Sun Mountain Resort and Fluke Hall at the University of Washington. Prior to joining NBBJ, Buckley worked at Venturi, Rauch and Scott Brown in Philadelphia. He holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Washington and a master's degree from the University of Pennsylvania. Buckley has received the Arther Spayd Brook Memorial Gold Medal in design and the E. Lewis Dales Traveling Fellowship. His design work has been widely published. Steven McConnell, John Savo and Rick Zieve have been named principals with NBBJ. McConnell joined the firm in 1990, and has led design and planning for the Swedish Medical Center Southeast Wing addition, the new U.S. Federal Courthouse in Seattle and the new Milwaukee Brewers ballpark. Prior to joining NBBJ, he worked in Tokyo for Arata Isozaki, where he was lead designer for the Kashii Twin Towers of Fukuoka. Since joining NBBJ in 1985, Savo has been involved in the design of Two Union Square, the Paramount Theatre renovation, and Metropolis International in Bangkok, Thailand. He is an instructor of modern art at the Art Institute of Seattle and has taught architectural history and theory at the University of Washington and Boston Architectural Center. Zieve joined NBBJ in 1988 and has worked on some of the firm's largest projects, including the new baseball stadium and renovations of the KeyArena and SeaTac Airport. Previously, Zieve was vice president and design director for CRSS of Houston.
Herbert Rozendaal has joined Andersen Bjornstad Kane Jacobs, Inc. (ABKJ) as manager of the Manila office. He is overseeing structural design of three tower projects in Manila as well as several other large projects there. Terry Stewart has joined the firm as a new CAD manager. He was most recently with Parsons Brinckerhoff Quade & Douglas. Martin Tayler has joined the firm as a CAD technician. He comes to ABKJ from Puget Sound Energy. Bill Tibbits is a new construction inspector at ABKJ. He was most recently with Alpha Engineering.
Jeff Smith has joined HOK has an associate and senior designer. He has extensive experience in the design of convention and conference centers, corporate headquarters buildings and research and manufacturing facilities. He has served as project designer for the Eddie Bauer Corporate Headquarters in Redmond, the Hewlett Packard manufacturing and office expansion in San Diego and the Sacramento Convention Center Expansion. Jim Beley has joined the firm as an architectural technician, and is currently providing architectural design services for the MAC (move and change) project for the Microsoft Corporation. Monique Laksana has joined HOK as an architectural intern. Her responsibilities will include construction documentation, site models, shop drawing documentation, and site surveys.
Chyuan-Shen Lee has joined HDR Engineering, Inc. as a senior bridge engineer in the Bellevue office. He has more than 10 years of design experience ranging from structural design to seismic retrofitting of bridges and buildings. He has also load rated numerous bridges in Maryland, Delaware, Oregon and Washington.
John Echlin has been appointed design director at SERA Architecture in Portland. He comes to the firm from Lucerne, Switzerland and brings over 18 years of international experience to SERA. He was actively involved in establishing the first international chapter of the American Institute of Architects in continental Europe. Prior to going to Switzerland, he spent several years as an associate of Charles Moore in Los Angeles.
Earl Dierking has joined David Evans & Associates (DEA) as manager of right-of-way and real estate services for the Puget Sound area. He was previously real property acquisition and disposition manager for Tri-Met and the Westside Light Rail project in Portland. He is currently working on easement acquisition for the Woodinville Valley Trail. Pat Plumb has joined DEA as a project manager for both the natural resources and land development business groups. She has served as project manager for mixed-use, commercial and hospitality development projects. William R. Garing recently joined DEA as a senior transportation engineer with 35 years of experience in the public and private sectors. He is currently working on the Smart Trek Model Deployment Initiative project. Other DEA staff additions include Juan Hernandez, graphic designer and Catherine Kim, marketing coordinator.
Elisabeth Beers, interior design principal at Norman B. Sandler Architects, received the Designer of Distinction Award from the Washington State Chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers. Her projects include corporate space plans for Tosco and Midcom buildings throughout the country, and the renovation of Hertzl Ner Tamid on Mercer Island. She has begun a collaborative effort with glass artist Dale Chihuly to create a series of grotto chandeliers for a client. Her work has been featured in Architectural Digest and Interior Design Magazine.
Sara Helmbrecht has joined W&H Pacific's Bellevue office as human resources assistant. She holds a bachelor of science degree in business administration with minors in marketing and operations management from Eastern Washington University.
SERA of Portland recently completed a contract with Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission to evaluate 213 depression-era facilities located in 23 parks across the state. The study provides a cultural context evaluation, a condition analysis of each facility and a scope cost estimate for administrative options. Also, SERA has completed a feasibility study in Tanasbourne, Oregon for ADC Telecommunications, and is now beginning work on master planning for a 27-acre site accommodating facilities for two local divisions. Interior design work is now underway for the office of public relations firm Conkling, Fiskum & McCormick.
Miles Yanick & Company of Bainbridge Island has recently completed the design of five new duplex residences to be added to Austurbruin Development, a federally funded, low-income housing project in Poulsbo. The 10-unit rental homes were commissioned by Kitsap County Consolidated Housing Authority, owner and agent for the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Construction on the $709,000 project, which is designed to integrate with existing single-family homes in the neighborhood, will begin this month. The contractor is Wolverine Supply, Inc. of Vancouver.
Sienna Architecture has produced a schematic design for an Alzheimer's resident care facility to be developed by Portland-based Regent Assisted Living, Inc. To reduce anxiety associated with barriers in the Alzheimer patients' environment, the 25,000-square-foot prototype incorporates wayfinding elements and looped corridors to promote meaningful wandering among residents. Exterior views, furnishings and color schemes vary throughout the loop. The 48-bed prototype is a stand-alone building which features flexible, compact design suitable to a number of sites. Sienna and the owner, Regent Assisted Living, plan to work on several more facilities over the next few years.
