SEATTLE -- Anyone with an interest in cleaning up hazardous waste sites with vegetation should attend the next dinner meeting of the Pacific Northwest Chapter of the Academy of Hazardous Materials Management. To be held from 6 to 9 p.m. on Dec. 1 at Latitude 47 restaurant in Seattle, the program will feature Phil Thompson, a Seattle University professor of civil and environmental engineering. Thompson will describe his research on the uptake of explosives, such as TNT and RDX, from soil by poplar trees. The cost is $25 per person with reservations, $30 without. To make reservations, call Chip Romain at (206) 296-6187. The deadline for reservations is 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 25.

The Easter Seals EDI Awards recently honored Seattle's Cole & Weber for a print advertisement designed for the Boeing Co. The EDI Awards recognize advertisers for their work in promoting equality, dignity and independence for people with disabilities by including and portraying people with disabilities in advertising.

Varsity Sports Communications, a Seattle sports publishing, sponsorship, and event management firm, has hired Kris Wallace as an accounting associate, Matt Finlinson as a marketing sales associate; Lonjina Verdugo as a graphic designer; Melissa Mannan as an accounting associate; and Melinda Haynes as a client services representative.
Nicholas P. Guarriello has been named president and chief executive officer of R.W. Beck, Inc. He joined the firm in 1977 after seven years with American Electric Power Company. Guarriello is has focused on helping public power utilities trough power supply planning and contractual arrangements. He played a key role in the formation of joint action power agencies such as the Florida Municipal Power Agency and the Municipal Energy Agency of Mississippi.
Linda Allen, Alex Murillo and Matthew Brennan recently joined the engineering group in the Seattle office of Herrera Environmental Consultants. Paul Chiechlowski has joined the firm as CAD manager. Allen is an environmental engineer specializing in water, wastewater, and stormwater facilities. She was most recently with the City of Bellevue Utilities Department. Murillo has joined the firm as civil engineer. He has worked in various capacities as an engineer for the Boeing Company, the City of Tacoma, and WSDOT. Brennan is an environmental engineer with expertise in surface water quality, hydrology, and stream ecology. Chiechlowski is past president and owner of a small underwater construction corporation.
Richard Abe has joined KPG as a project manager. He was previously a partner with a Honolulu architectural firm. Other recent addition to to KPG include Jeff Hamlin, project engineer; Donald M. Anderson, design engineer, Nandez Miller, design engineer, and James R. Raby, office manager and marketing coordinator.
Black & Veatch has added four to its Seattle professional engineering staff. John T.M. DeLorie is an analytical chemist and contract systems analyst. Nete Leth is a recent graduate of the University of Washington, where she was awarded the Society of Women Engineers "Outstanding Female Student" title in civil engineering in 1998. Alan I. Lord is also a recent graduate of the University of Washington, and was a summer intern for the Port of Seattle, where he inspected construction projects. Grizelda Sarria holds a bachelor's degree in civil and environmental engineering from Seattle University. She interned with Black & Veatch in 1997, and recently returned from Zambia, where she worked on power supplies, a solar power cooker, mud-clay housing, and natural insecticide and pesticide programs.
