Frank Wenzel, engineering manager for Stone Construction Equipment, announced the appointment of Steve Miller as manager of the technical services department. Miller has degrees in both mechanical engineering and industrial technology. He comes to Stone with a background in technical services and experience as both a service manager and a quality assurance manager. Miller will be responsible for the management of the company's technical service department whose charter is to conduct service shcools, assist customers with technical issues and administer the Stone warranty program. Miller will also be responsible for overseeing the installation of the company's computerized diagnostic troubleshooting discipline. The Seattle office of Think New Ideas, a brand communications company, has added Erika Hoffner and Francesca Merlini to its staff. Hoffner joins Think as a project manager. She was an account executive at Barron & Co. in Bellingham. Merlini joins the staff as a project coordinator. She joins Think from an internship with Big Bang Engineering.

GLY Construction has added three new staff and promoted Mark Maples from general foreman to superintendent. Maples joined GLY in 1984 and has worked on projects at the University of Washington, Roosevelt Medical Center, World Vision and Adobe Systems. The new hires include Tim Gottberg, Stacy-Michelle Ried and Amy Marshall. Gottberg is the company's new safety director. In that role, he is leading the development and implementation of GLY's comprehensive safety program. Ried is a new project engineer. She is providing technical assistance on Quadrant's East Campus office park in Federal Way. She holds a bachelor's degree in construction from Arizona State University. Marshall is a project engineer, providing support on a variety of projects for high-tech clients. She holds a bachelor's degree in construction management from the University of Washington.
Dennis Jackson has joined the Olympia office of Kristen Betty & Assoc., a construction management services firm. Jackson, a professional engineer, spent 30 years with the state Department of Transportation, where he held top management positions in design, construction, materials and maintenance. He has expertise in the design and construction of roadways and bridges, and is also a skilled negotiator and facilitator. Kristen Betty's main office is in Bellevue.
Andrew Clagett has joined Halvorson, Beach & Bower as a project engineer. At HBB, Clagett's projects include the Lynnwood Hall and Music Building for Edmonds Community College and a renovation and addition at the Oak Harbor Middle School. Based in Seattle, HBB provides mechanical engineering and energy and cost studies.
Dale Paul, senior architect and CAD manager, has been promoted to an associate at EMRA after one year with the firm. Paul has experience with aviation, transit, convention centers, public assembly and hotel projects. His current transit responsibilities include two Sound Transit Link tunnel stations. His past work includes architecture and CAD management and production for the HNTB Corp. in Bellevue. James Cave has been hired as a senior architect. Cave will be serving as EMRA's project architect on the Sound Transit Link Central Maintenance Facility and the Federal Way Transit Center's park-and-ride structure and mixed-use projects. Before joining EMRA, he has worked for David Nordfors Architects. Richard Jones recently joined the firm as a CAD technician. Prior to joining the EMRA, he worked for MHA. EMRA is a Seattle-based architecture, planning and urban design firm. Its work is focused primarily on institutional projects, which include transit/transportation facilities, related mixed-use developments and civic facilities.
Sake Reindersma was recently promoted to vice president at Mulvanny Architects. Currently, Reindersma is in charge of marketing, client management and the development of roll-out programs for several large corporations, including Borders Books and Music, Nike, Office Max and Kinko's at various locations throughout the United States. Mulvanny Architects has offices in Bellevue and Seattle, Portland, Sterling, Va., and Boston. In September, the firm merged with G2 Architecture, creating the Seattle-based division, Mulvanny G2.
DuWayne Brave has recently joined Roth Hill Engineering Partners as a field technician. Brave has field experience locating telephone, power and natural gas cables and pipes, as well as tree cutting, trail building and maintenance. Based in Bellevue, Roth Hill Engineering provides municipal engineering services.
Ron Kennedy has recently been promoted to associate at Arai/Jackson Architects & Planners. Kennedy is working on the North End Airport Terminal strategic planning study at the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. Gary Oppenheimer has also been promoted to associate at the firm. Oppenheimer is the project architect for the new Uwajimaya retail and housing complex in the International District. Based in Seattle, Arai/Jackson Architects & Planners focuses on institutional and civic projects. Its services include architecture, urban planning and design, interior space planning and design and construction management.
Jim Guarre has been promoted to senior vice president at Berger/ABAM Engineers. Guarre has been with the company since 1972. He is currently the vice president and head of the firm's public works and transportation department. Some of his transportation projects over the past two decades include the Vancouver SkyTrain, the Detroit CATS people mover, the State Route 705 Tacoma Spur and the Redondo seawall and roadway. Arnie Rusten has been promoted to vice president of the domestic waterfront sector. Rusten has been with the company since 1977, working primarily on waterfront projects, including the entire Navy Homeport project in Everett. V.K. Kumar has been promoted to vice president of the international waterfront sector. He has been with the company since 1978. For the past several years, Kumar has worked to develop port projects for the Stevedoring Services of America, a national and international port developer and operator. Located in Federal Way, Berger/ABAM is a subsidiary of Louis Berger International, an engineering consulting firm based in East Orange, N.J. Berger/ABAM specializes in building, public works, transportation and waterfront projects.
Lee Norwood has joined WaterLeaf Architecture & Interiors as director of business development. She will direct business development strategies, marketing and public relations. With offices in Portland and Seattle, WaterLeaf Architecture & Interiors provides planning, architectural and interior design and construction administration services.
Damon Deaton has joined HDR Engineering as a CADD technician. HDR is an employee-owned firm providing architecture, engineering and project development services for water, transportation, environmental management, health care, justice and science and technology. Based in Omaha, HDR Engineering has offices around the world, with a local office in Bellevue.
Keith Ahola, who directed transportation planning and project development efforts for the Washington State Department of Transportation's southwest region, has come out of retirement to establish a Vancouver office for Skillings-Connolly. The civil engineering firm is based in Lacey, with offices in Seattle, Montana and northern California. The Vancouver office will serve clients in southwest Washington and northwest Oregon.
