Seattle-based architecture and interior design firm Clark Barnes promoted Lauren Garkel to partner. Garkel has been with the firm for over 12 years, where she has worked on commercial, multifamily and hospitality projects. Her passion for sustainable design propelled the firm to enter the mass timber sector. Garkel's current work includes an eight-story cross-laminated timber hotel in Ballard and the 18-story Akari House on First Hill, which is set to be the largest mass timber building in the Pacific Northwest.

In Tacoma, PCS Structural Solutions promoted Caitlin O'Loughlin to project manager. O'Loughlin joined PCS in 2019 with four years of engineering experience and has a keen attention to detail. O'Loughlin is working on the hotel tower for the Muckleshoot Indian Tribe, several mixed-use projects in Olympia and a remodel of a church in Lacey, and is a leader of PCS's diversity, equity and inclusion team. PCS Structural Solutions is a 75-person structural engineering firm with offices also in Seattle and Portland.

In Bellevue, Gordon Phillips rejoined HNTB Corp.'s architecture practice as aviation project director. Phillips delivers significant design projects for aviation clients, including Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. He is an architect and engineer with over three decades of experience in planning, design and implementation of aviation facilities in the U.S., Europe and Asia. His recent work has focused on planning, design and construction administration of airport terminals in a technical capacity and a managerial role. Previously, as design manager for another consulting firm, he worked with staff at Sea-Tac on large infrastructure improvements. He was an HNTB project director from 2009 to 2013, leading aviation projects, including the Terminal 2 West “Green Build” expansion at San Diego International Airport. HNTB is an infrastructure firm.


In Seattle, Bassetti Architects promoted Mariko Park to senior associate and Tegan Hill to associate. Park has over 14 years of experience providing interior design and furniture, furnishings and equipment services, specializing in large complex projects in the Pacific Northwest and Mountain regions. She has been instrumental in the growth of Bassetti's interior design department over the past seven years. She is pursuing a master's in historic preservation at Boston Architectural College while leading interior design efforts on Benson Polytechnic High School in Portland, Mount Baker Theatre in Bellingham and a tenant improvement in the Pioneer Square neighborhood. Hill has two years of experience in business development and marketing for Bassetti, initially as senior marketing coordinator, and more recently as marketing director. In that role, she will leverage her 16 years of experience in the industry to continue managing firm-wide marketing activities.

In Seattle, Salas O'Brien hired Elizabeth Robinson as director of interior design. Robinson has 35 years of experience in interior design and leading projects for corporate, higher education, health care and hospitality Fortune 500 clients. She has worked on headquarters and corporate campuses for clients that include General Motors, Google, Mercedes Benz and Kohls. She has a management background and is well-versed in all aspects of design. Salas O'Brien is an employee-owned multidisciplinary design firm with 35 offices nationwide.



In Seattle, Sazan Group hired Joel Gragg as marketing director and promoted Estrella Sung to marketing manager. In Portland, it hired Sara Drenzek as senior marketing coordinator. Gragg has over 10 years of experience in the architecture, engineering and construction industry, with previous roles as marketing manager for DLR Group and Meng Analysis. He will direct all marketing efforts for Sazan across its three offices. Sung has nearly two decades of experience in the industry, starting as a graphic design lead at Golder and progressing to proposal and senior marketing roles at Gensler, Glumac, NBBJ and HDR. She manages Sazan’s day-to-day marketing and proposal development, primarily in the Seattle office. Drenzek has six years of experience in the AEC industry, including as the marketing manager for Ankrom Moisan Architects. She will be the lead marketer in Sazan’s Portland office. Sazan Group provides mechanical, electrical and fire protection engineering, information technology systems consulting, lighting design and owner representation services.

DCI Engineers, a civil and structural engineering firm, hired Ethan Martin as an associate in Portland. Martin is on the structural team and will focus on mass timber design for West Coast projects. Previously, he was Northwest regional director at WoodWorks, the wood industry’s nonprofit for advancing knowledge and technical support in commercial wood building projects in the U.S. While there, he assisted DCI on the Flatiron PDX, 120 Clay and Fair Haired Dumbbell projects. Martin has a background in mass timber code, permitting and design. He collaborated with Oregon and Washington officials to set new precedents in prescriptive building codes and contributed to the performance-based design of tall wood buildings. He also co-founded the International Mass Timber Conference with Forest Business Network in Portland.
