PACE Engineers, Inc. announced the addition of two new hires to its engineering group: Don Vehige and Kristal Greenhaw. Vehige is a principal planner with over 20 years of experience including subdivisions, master-planned communities, and mixed-use projects of various scales and levels of complexity. These efforts include streetscapes, parks and trail systems, and customized development standards. Greenhaw is a senior project manager with 28 years of experience specializing in land development, transportation engineering, highways, telecommunications, and stormwater design.

Rice Fergus Miller announced the retirement of Dave Fergus, long-time principal and market leader for the firm's robust fire and emergency services market. Fergus will retire on June 1 2022. The Bremerton-based architecture, interiors, and planning firm has over 54 employees, over 20 of whom are working exclusively on the design and construction administration of fire stations, 9-1-1 call centers, and fleet and logistics facilities across Washington, Oregon, and Idaho. Fergus joined the firm in 1987, shortly after the founding by Steve Rice, who himself retired in December 2021. The two led the firm, then known as Rice Fergus Architects, until Mike Miller joined in 1990. The firm became known as Rice Fergus Miller and expanded from community projects and fire stations to include healthcare and senior living. Today, the firm works on fire services and civic projects, healthcare, hospitality, senior living, market-rate and affordable housing projects throughout the Pacific Northwest and beyond. Additionally, Rice Fergus Miller has become known as a leader in serving Coast Salish Tribes with culturally appropriate architecture, interior design, and planning services.

One of the projects Fergus is most proud of was the design of the Kitsap 9/11 Memorial. While not only honoring the 343 FDNY firefighters who perished that day, the memorial recognizes those who survived and those who saved the life of someone else at the cost of their own. As Fergus steps away four principals will continue to lead the firm: Greg Belding, Jennifer Fleming, Dean Kelly, and Gunnar Gladics. Gladics will take the reigns of fire and emergency services market.

ScharrerAD promoted Frank Brescia, AIA to principal. Brescia has 16 years of experience and has led many of ScharrerAD's transit and agency projects, including multiple Sound Transit early and final designs for Link Light Rail and Bus Rapid Transit stations. He is a LEED Accredited Professional and has also served NCARB on their Continuing Education Evaluation Work Group.

Weber Thompson has promoted seven staff members to new leadership positions in the firm. Brittany Porter AIA, CPHC, LEED GA and John Stout AIA, LEED AP BD+C have been promoted to senior associate. Laurie Wilson AIA, Tanya Kataria LEED AP, Erik Schultz AIA, Sam Castro RA, and Leslie Riibe have been promoted to associate.

Senior Associate Brittany Porter joined WT's Workplace Design Studio in 2018, bringing a wealth of highly sustainable experience, including managing the design and construction of one of Washington State's first multifamily Passive House buildings. She is a frequent speaker on sustainable design principles, a certified Passive House consultant, and a past Board Member for Passive House Northwest. Brittany is the Young Architects Regional Director for the AIA Northwest & Pacific Region, acting as liaison to the Committee on the Environment. Currently, she is working on Northlake Commons, a mass timber, lab-ready building pursuing LEED Gold certification.

Senior Associate John Stout is a core member of Weber Thompson's high rise design studio. He brings a passion for high rise design, advancement and technology to his skyline changing design work on projects such as Nexus, The Ivey and the Ayer. Stout serves on the board for the CTBUH and is highly active in mentoring programs at the University of Washington Department of Architecture.

Associate architect Laurie Wilson is a senior project manager in Weber Thompson's Affordable Housing Team, working to deliver mixed-use projects such as the Opportunity Center at Othello Square and the SCIDpda North Lot project on the historic Pacific Medical Center campus. Wilson is one of the first African-American women architects licensed in Washington State. She was a founder of the “Cities for All Project,” and has supported organizations including Africatown Community Land Trust, King Street Station Arts, The Black Farmer's Collective, as well as numerous planning and design boards.

Associate Tanya Kataria is a designer in WT's affordable housing team. She is a member of the Citizen's Housing Commission in the City of Edmonds, working on public policy that promote diverse, affordable housing options. More recently, she was admitted to AIA National Next To Lead program, a pilot leadership program that removes barriers to AIA Leadership positions for ethnically diverse women.

Associate Sam Castro is Weber Thompson's BIM Manager and a licensed architect. He leads the firm's Revit User Group and is engaged in local and wide-ranging BIM roundtables. He also consults on WT's IT and technology initiatives.

Associate Erik Schultz is a project architect in Weber Thompson's Workplaces Studio leading a mass timber, lab ready high rise through documentation. Outside of his projects Schultz is a member of WT's Revit group, presenting to the office, developing content, and providing overall consulting and BIM office Hours to the office. He is also a staunch advocate for Scrum and has presented to the office this alternative method for project delivery.

Associate Leslie Riibe is a senior graphic designer at Weber Thompson, a member of WT's might marketing team. She is the designer and gatekeeper of Weber Thompson's brand assets and consults with project team on building signage. Riibe has contributed to environmental graphics for a number of WT projects include Ascent, Marlowe, Watershed, and Northlake Commons. She is an active member of her Toastmasters group and frequently contributes her design talents to non-profits, including the Seattle Architecture Foundation, Passive House Northwest and the AIA Diversity Roundtable. In 2016 she added a certificate in User-Centered Design from the University of Washington to her educational experience.

BCRA welcomed two new employees. Sue Roulinski has joined the firm from B+H Architects as a senior level interior designer who brings nearly a decade of workplace and retail design experience. She will have the opportunity support the retail and healthcare markets at BCRA's Seattle office.

Marcy Naismith is a senior level interior design and medical planning associate and former principal from Ankrom Moisan Architects who brings 18 years of experience and leadership to BCRA. She primarily worked in the healthcare market with extensive experience in both inpatient and outpatient healthcare. At BCRA, she will continue to help grow and support the healthcare market and will be based out of Portland.

Farallon Consulting recently welcomed David Waymire to its Irvine, California office and Carla Mauger to its Portland office. Waymire is an air quality scientist with over 25 years of specialized expertise in air quality modeling, impact analysis, risk management, emissions quantification, and air quality permitting. His experience includes application, development, and interpretation of meteorological models; health risk assessments for dozens of industrial facilities, including some of the largest facilities considered under California's AB2588 Air Toxics program; air quality impact assessments for environmental impact reports; and consequence analysis of accidental releases.

Mauger brings with her over 30 years' experience as an environmental manager with a demonstrated ability to apply deep multi-media regulatory, advanced technical, and business management expertise to achieve organizational strategic, operational, and sustainability goals. She develops, implements, and maintains comprehensive environmental management systems, policies, and procedures that result in sustained environmental regulatory compliance. Her areas of expertise include the management of hazardous materials, solid and hazardous wastes, and industrial wastewater; emergency response; process improvement; and employee training.

Helix Design Group, Inc. welcomed four new team members, Ellie Behzad, Marlene Druker, Chelsea McConnell and Wendy Burdett. Behzad, is an architect with over 15 years of experience both in the US and abroad. She has dedicated six years of her professional life to K-12 designs. She is also an advocate of green building. This interest encouraged her to take a year certification degree at the University of Washington in integrated lighting and daylighting design.

Druker has over 20 years of experience and is a registered architect in the state of Washington. One of her first projects is the building that now houses Dunagan Irish Pub and Brewery. She brings to Helix her past experience of work on multiple custom homes, both remodels and new construction, including her own. Her interest in urban design has led her to volunteering on her local main street association's design committee and writing for the advocacy group Strong Towns. McConnell joined Helix with 5 years of experience in the graphic design field with a primary focus in the development of branded business collateral, wall wraps, signage, print/digital advertising, and a variety of many other supporting graphics. For Helix, she has recently completed work for the Pendleton Car Wash exterior elevations, as well as developed branded signage and design of the monument sign concepts for the same project. She is a graduate of the Cornish College of the Arts and received a Bachelor's of Fine Arts in Graphic Design.

Burdett recently joined the Helix marketing team coming from the residential side of design and marketing. She worked in that area for over 20 years serving clients in the Home Building Industry all across the country. For Helix, she will work closely with the marketing Director to help coordinate and execute a broad range of marketing tasks including RFQ/RFP responses, identifying potential projects and supporting social media content and outreach.

Mitch Romero has joined Parametrix as a senior construction manager based in Puyallup. He has 30 years of experience in architecture, project management, and construction management. Romero comes to Parametrix from OAC Services where he was a senior director. His recent project experience includes serving as primary manager for a biotech manufacturing company in Wilsonville, OR and project manager for the Tokeland, WA Tsunami Tower. He is highly experienced in Washington State alternative delivery methods. His general contractor/construction manager projects include major renovation and infrastructure upgrades for the Spokane International Airport. He has also delivered 13 public school projects.

Previously, Romero served as Foreign Service Construction Engineer for the United States Department of State. He used traditional design build to deliver diplomatic facilities in Brazil, Afghanistan, NATO Brussels, Nigeria, and Djibouti. Prior to that he was an architect and program manager for Heery/CBRE working for Seattle Schools, Oak Harbor Schools, Lake Washington School District, and a series of projects for the United States Department of Homeland Security

Olympia-based Thomas Architecture Studios announced the promotion of senior project managers Josh Gobel and Tom Rieger, to associate principal. Since joining TAS in 2016, Gobel has been involved in the design of several commercial, residential, and mixed-use, multifamily projects in the Olympia and the South Puget Sound region. Completed projects include The Lurana, a mixed-use waterfront development, and The Easterly - both located in the Olympia downtown area. Gobel is currently overseeing the design and construction of Market Flats and Malt House - two mixed-use infill projects - as well as Old 99, an infill project with 48 residential units targeting workforce and affordable housing. He is concurrently overseeing the design of West Bay Yards, a destination waterfront development with nearly 500 residential units spread throughout five buildings with an esplanade and large public plaza.

Gobel serves on the American Institution of Architects Southwest Chapter as board president, is past-president for Olympia Downtown Alliance, and is Lead Mentor for the TAS Career-Connected Mentoring Program through Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwest Washington. He holds a Master of Architecture and a Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Design from Montana State University, as well as a Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Studies from the University of Oregon.

Rieger joined TAS in 2014 and has successfully completed a wide range of project types, including private development, schools, government, and non-profit. Completed projects include Briggs Village Master Plan Amendment, Thurston First Bank/Franklin Lofts, 321 Lofts, Annie's Flats, The Views on Fifth, and most recently the design for the AIA/SWW award winning History & Nature Center at Brewery Park in Tumwater. He is currently working on the new Agricultural Business and Innovation Park in Tenino for Thurston Economic Development Council and the Hands On Children's Museum Phase II design. Rieger also leads many of TAS' corporate office building projects for clients such as Port of Olympia, Pacific Northwest Regional Council of Carpenters, and Cement Masons and Plasterers Local 528 Headquarters & Training Center. Rieger is currently serving the second of two consecutive terms as past president for AIASWW, is president-elect at AIA Washington Council, and serves on the Board for Olympia Film Society. He holds a Bachelor of Architecture from Washington State University.
