Should a rental car company rent a car to an uninsured driver? This “matter of first impression” was recently addressed by the Mississippi Supreme Court.
In 2001, 45-year-old Osie Singleton rented a car from Enterprise Rent-A-Car at one of its locations in Jackson, Miss. Singleton displayed his valid Mississippi driver's license to Enterprise personnel, who recorded its license number and expiration date on the rental agreement. Although he had no liability insurance of his own, the company didn't require Singleton to buy supplemental liability protection before renting the car.
