After 14 years without having a single elected body representing the whole of London, the Greater London Authority was formed in 2000.
The GLA has an elected mayor and an elected assembly overseeing and advising the mayor, similar to the American model. Its functions include oversight of things such as transportation, police, fire and civil protection, housing, tourism, land use planning and economic development.
