Dick Dorsett recently joined the port of Tacoma as governmental affairs manager. He manages the port's state legislative agenda and works on transportation and the environment. Dorsett was deputy director for Pierce County government relations, where he did management and policy development. He helped form the Puyallup River Watershed Council, a citizen-based environmental restoration coalition. The port of Tacoma handles more than $26 billion in trade each year.
The Washington Glass Assocation board has named new officers: Ed Howell of Seattle's Hargung Glass Industries is president; Rick Wakefield of Seattle-based Wakefield Glass is vice president; Bonnie Fay of Seattle company Northwestern Industries is secretary; Greg Barnhart of Mukilteo-based Pacific Glass & Door is treasurer; Bernie Thueringer of the Renton office of Pacific Glass will remain an officer. Directors are Susan Stevens of Kent-based SGS Glass Co.; Mike Garland of Eubanks Glass in Centralia; and Gary Towndrow of RGA Architectural Sales in Redmond and Brad Weeks of Seattle-based Colorado Steel Sash. Maryanne Howell remains executive director.
Harold Carr, former vice president of public relations and advertising for Boeing, was among those honored at an awards gala hosted by the Puget Sound chapter of the Public Relations Society of America. Carr received a lifetime achievement award. Also recognized were: Lou Cancelmi of Alaska Airlines; Kathryn Reith of Even Keel Consulting; Cheri Brennan of Alliance Communications; Erik Elvejord of Holland America Line. The nonprofit for public relations professionals has 400 members in western Washington. Members are from corporations, agencies, government, health care and other service organizations.

The U.S. Small Business Administration will host an expo to recognize small business people April 26-28, during National Small Business Week. SBA Expo 2005 will be in Washington, D.C., and feature a business matchmaking event, seminars and award ceremonies. The administration has helped more than 20 million Americans start and grow their businesses, and has made more than $211 billion in loans to entrepreneurs. The Federal Way Driver Licensing Office has new hours. The office is at 1617 S. 324th St. and will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursdays. Gov. Gary Locke recently appointed lawyer Sally Olsen to the Kitsap County Superior Court. Olsen takes a new position created to handle rising caseloads. Olsen has been a lawyer in general civil and criminal practice for 11 years and has expertise in family law, and landlord and tenant issues. She was a deputy prosecuting lawyer in King County.

William S. Ayer, chairman and chief executive officer of Seattle-based Alaska Air Group, was named to the board of directors of Puget Energy and its wholly owned utility subsidiary Puget Sound Energy. Ayer is chairman and chief executive officer of Alaska Air Group, the parent company of Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air.
The Seattle Foundation recently awarded almost $1.2 million in grants to 59 King County nonprofits through its community grant program. Grants range from $2,500 to $75,000 and will be used by nonprofits that work in the arts, education and health, for example. Among the winners are Atlantic Street Center, $40,000; CASA Latina, $30,000; FareStart, $75,000; and The Food Bank at St. Mary's, $15,000. The Seattle Foundation works to improve quality of life in the greater Seattle area. It has assets of more than $350 million.
South Snohomish County Chamber will start a luncheon series on economic development. The first of three sessions will be Jan. 19 at Embassy Suites Hotel, 20610 44th Ave. W. in Lynnwood from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Speakers will be Deborah Knutson, president of the Snohomish County Economic Development Council, and Dave Waggoner, director of Paine Field.
