Fraser Mendel, a shareholder at Northwest regional law firm Schwabe, Williamson & Wyatt, has been named to the board of the Washington State China Relations Council. The council promotes stronger commercial, educational and cultural relations between the state of Washington and the People's Republic of China. Mendel co-chairs Schwabe's China practice.
Seattle Symphony's board of directors elected Leslie Jackson Chihuly as its new chair. Chihuly will succeed Susan Hutchison whose term as chair ends this month. Hutchison will continue to serve on the board of directors. Chihuly is president of Chihuly Inc. and Portland Press, and has worked with Chihuly Studio since 1994. She has been on the board for the past five years.
Dr. Robert Winrow has been named medical director of Northwest Kidney Centers' Snoqualmie Ridge Kidney Center. Winrow is a nephrologist and was recently the medical advisor of Northwest Kidney Centers' Diabetes Program in Seattle.
Seattle-based Bartell Drugs recently opened the first of three new stores. The new store, located at 3625 148th St. S.W., is Bartell's 55th store. Bartell's will open two other stores this year, one in Mill Creek in August and another in Issaquah in September.

Matt Bomberger, owner of 0/8 Seafood Grill and Twisted Cork Wine Bar, will open STIR Martini + Raw Bar in Bellevue in August. Solstice Restaurant Group, Bomberger's newly named management company, will oversee all three restaurant brands. The $1.5 million, 4,400-square-foot, first-floor Bellevue Place site will have seating for 175, an outdoor patio with a fire pit and indoor patio seating. STIR will have 40 employees and is projecting $2 million in revenues annually.
Boise-based Marshall and Associates, a provider of GeoResults spatially enabled software solutions, hired Roy Forsstrom as director of professional services. Forsstrom is a former nuclear reactor operator in the U.S. Navy.
ColumbiaGrid said Douglas County PUD, headquartered in East Wenatchee, has joined in the planning agreement, which aims to improve and enhance the Northwest's transmission system. The PUD will work with eight other utilities plus the Bonneville Power Administration to solve problems on the transmission grid and lay the groundwork for needed projects.

Harry Schneider, a trial lawyer and partner in the Seattle law firm of Perkins Coie, will receive the 2009 American Inns of Court Professionalism Award for the Ninth Circuit. The award recognizes a senior lawyer or judge whose life and practice display character and integrity.
The Washington State University College of Education hired Phyllis Erdman as interim dean and Cori Mantle-Bromley as interim associate dean. Erdman has been chair of the Department of Educational Leadership & Counseling Psychology since 2003. Mantle-Bromley has been chair of the Department of Teaching & Learning since 2005. The positions resulted from the recent deaths of Dean Judy Nichols Mitchell and Interim Dean Len Foster.
True Religion Apparel will open a store in Bellevue Square in September. The 1,925-square-foot store will carry the True Religion collection for men, women and children including jeans, sportswear and handbags, as well as footwear, swimwear and fragrances.
Seattle Southside Visitor Services, the official tourism department for the cities of Tukwila, SeaTac, Kent and Des Moines, hired Ashley Comar as marketing communications coordinator for tourism and marketing. Comar was marketing coordinator for Perlego Systems in Gig Harbor.
