Chef/Restaurateur John Howie hired Mark Manca as general manager of the new John Howie Steak restaurant in Bellevue. Manca is a fourth generation food and beverage industry professional in the Pacific Northwest. He spent the past three years in Las Vegas and was recently general manager of the Range Steakhouse in Harrah's, and now is returning to Seattle to work with Howie, a previous partner. The restaurant will open Sept. 12 at The Shops at The Bravern.
Charter Bank hired James Garvey as chief executive officer in anticipation of Keith Jackson's planned retirement in 2010. Garvey was hired as president and chief operating officer in July. Jackson will become chairman of Charter Bank until his scheduled retirement date in 2010. Thomas Porter will remain chairman of the board of directors.
The National Board of Medical Examiners, based in Philadelphia, elected Suzanne Anderson to a four-year term as a member-at-large of the National Board of Medical Examiners. Anderson is senior vice president, chief information officer and chief financial officer of Virginia Mason Medical Center.

The Polyclinic Northgate recently hired Molly Carlson in endocrinology and Florence Hsu in rheumatology. Hsu will continue to see patients at The Polyclinic Downtown, in addition to her office hours at Northgate. Carlson treats cholesterol disorders, thyroid disease, pituitary disease and other problems.
Contineo, a Spokane company specializing in compliance, auditing, consulting, technology and managed services for a variety of industries, has expanded its corporate presence to the Dallas/Fort Worth area and hired Kara Lamphere to manage the office. Lamphere worked with First Command Bank in Fort Worth as chief compliance officer.
Wells Fargo Securities hired Sumner Anderson as managing director of the Healthcare Investment Banking Group. Anderson has 12 years of industry experience and was recently global equities pharmaceutical analyst at Citadel Investment Group in Chicago.
Sound Community Bank, a subsidiary of Sound Financial, has acquired the Tacoma office of 1st Security Bank of Washington at 2941 S. 38th St. and the Port Angeles office at 1405 E. Front St. The operations of the Port Angeles office have been moved to Sound Community Bank's new branch. The Lakewood Towne Center branch will move to the Tacoma location.

Clearwire Corp. in Kirkland appointed two new members to its executive team. They are Erik Prusch as chief financial officer and Teresa Elder as president of strategic partnerships and wholesale. Prusch was president and chief executive officer of Borland Software and had previously worked with Intuit's Turbo Tax division and Identix Inc. Elder's post is a newly created position. She was recently CEO of Vodafone, Ireland.
Recreational Equipment, Inc. hired Ivar Chhina as chief financial officer. Chhina has been a member of the co-op's board of directors since March of 2006, most recently, as vice chair and as chair of the Audit and Finance Committee. He will resign his position on the board to serve as an employee. Chhina is a project-based partner with a San Francisco Bay Area private equity firm.
