Jerry Larson was elected president of the Western Washington Fair Association in Puyallup. Other officers are Gary Gonter, vice president; Michael Nelson, secretary; David Campbell, treasurer; and Kent Hojem, CEO. New board member Gary Tucci replaces Dennis Elvins, who is moving to emeritus status.
The Washington Glass Association has elected new officers and members of its board of directors. Bernie Thueringer of Pacific Glass in Renton is president; Amy Anderson of Atlas Supply in Seattle is vice president; Peter Barnhart of Pacific Glass & Door in Mukilteo is secretary; Ed Howell of Hartung Glass in Tukwila is treasurer. Directors for 2012 are Bill Coady, Bud Henson, Jon Larson, Richard Sorrells, Gary Towndrow, Jeff Wilson and Maryanne Howell.
The U.S. Conference of Mayors Workforce Development Council in Washington, D.C., honored Marlena Sessions with the first Distinguished Service Award. Sessions is CEO of the Workforce Development Council of Seattle-King County.

Bradley Smith, dean of Western Washington University's Huxley College of the Environment, will retire from the position he has held since 1994. Smith will serve as dean until July and continue working on university projects for the next year, including on Western's Clean Energy program. The university is starting an international search for a replacement.
Gov. Chris Gregoire appointed Lori Kay Smith to King County Superior Court. Smith is a King County Superior Court commissioner and replaces Justice Steven Gonzalez who was appointed to the Washington State Supreme Court effective Jan. 1. Smith worked with the King County Prosecuting Attorney's Office for 20 years and was named a commissioner in 2006.
Oklahoma City-based Hobby Lobby Stores, a national retail chain of arts and crafts stores, is opening a store in Everett Feb. 27 at Pacific Highway 99 in the South Point Plaza shopping center. The store is 55,500 square feet. This is Hobby Lobby's fourth store in Washington.

The Suburban Cities Association hired Deanna Dawson as executive director. Dawson served on the Edmonds City Council from 2001 to 2008 and was executive director of Snohomish County. The association represents suburban cities in King County.
The World Association for Children and Parents was awarded the 2012 Evergreen Award by the Alliance for Nonprofits Washington for its efforts to strengthen the nonprofit sector. WACAP helps find homes for children in state care.
The Lake Washington College Foundation received its largest bequest on Jan. 13: $290,000 from the estate of Eastside resident and educator Marlene “Malka” Fricks. The total bequest is expected to reach $400,000. It will fund the Marlene “Malka” Fricks Scholarship, to support students in the applied design program. Fricks spent part of her career teaching Spanish and health.
