Tacoma Public Utilities Director/CEO Bill Gaines was elected vice chair of the American Public Power Association board. APPA represents 2,000 public power utilities in Washington D.C. Gaines is in line to chair the APPA board in two years. He is immediate past chair of the Large Public Power Council, which represents the 26 largest public power systems.
Kent Downtown Partnership has been designated an accredited Main Street America program for meeting standards of the National Main Street Center involving revitalization efforts, public-private partnerships, budgets and tracking progress. Randall Smith, president of Kent Downtown Partnership, said the group is focused on how the area looks and feels, and maintaining historic buildings.

Porch Chief Operating Officer and Director Asha Sharma is joining Seattle Foundation's board of trustees. Her three-year term begins this month. She has also worked at Microsoft, Deloitte Consulting and SC Johnson. Seattle Foundation manages $1 billion in philanthropic investments.
Seattle Metropolitan Credit Union has reopened its Southcenter branch in a new location: 17250 Southcenter Parkway, Suite 132, with an updated design and amenities. It has open and private spaces for conversations, and state-of-the-art Interactive Teller Machines to handle a variety of banking services.

The Department of Commerce has awarded Disability Rights Washington the contract to provide ombuds services for the new Washington Developmental Disabilities Ombuds program. The new office will act as watchdog for potential situations of abuse and neglect. It will monitor residential facilities, residences and services, and make recommendations for reforms.
Seattle-based law firm Christensen O'Connor Johnson Kindness has added four patent attorneys from the Seattle office of Blakely Sokoloff Taylor & Zafman. They are partners James Go and Cory Claassen, and associates Daniel Hutchins and Denton McAlister. All four have experience in semiconductors, computer hardware, medical devices, applied optics, micro-electro-mechanical systems and related technologies.

Gautam Pillay is the new vice provost for research and dean of the graduate school at Western Washington University. He replaces retiring Dean Kathleen Kitto. Pillay is associate vice president for research and sponsored programs at West Chester University of Pennsylvania, and has a degree in chemical engineering. He also worked at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Richland.
Steve Hooper, founder of Kigo Asian Kitchen, said his company has a new partner: Seattle chef Ethan Stowell. Stowell is helping re-vamp the menu in Kigo's four local locations. Hooper worked in tech finance before getting into the restaurant business. Stowell and his wife and business partner, Angela, have 15 restaurants in Seattle. Kigo also has a restaurant in Boston.
